Startide Rising"The Terran exploration vessel Streaker has crashed on the uncharted water world of Kithrup, bearing one of the most important discoveries in galactic history. Above, in space, armadas of alien races clash in a titanic struggle to claim her. Below, a handful of her human and dolphin crew battles armed rebellion and a hostile planet to safeguard her secret - the fate of the Progenitors, the fabled First Race who seeded wisdom throughout the stars."- from the back cover This is predominately a story about uplifted dolphins, though there are several humans and one uplifted chimp. Brin's dolphins use three languages (as appropriate), Primal - a psuedo-language used by pre-sentient, pre-uplifted, natural dolphins, Trinary - a language created by humans but patterned on Primal which allows dolphins to maintain and express their three-level/value-logic view of the world, and Anglic - a language which is syntactically English, but whose semantics and pronunciation have been modified for an animal who vocalizes using a blow-hole and quite often underwater. |
In Spring 1998, I took a course called LING603 - Science Fiction Linguistics from Prof James Armagost for which I wrote a paper concerning the Neo-Dolphin languages of Startide Rising. The title of the paper was "The Neo-dolphin Languages of David Brin's Startide Rising" . In this paper, I give an exposition of what Primal, Trinary, and Anglic are like as languages, and how Brin uses them as an integral part of telling the story of Startide Rising.

The Uplift War"As galactic armadas clash in quest of the ancient fleet of the Progenitors, a brutal alien race seizes the dying planet of Garth. The various Uplifted inhabitants of Garth must battle their overlords or face ultimate extinction. At stake is the existence of Terran society and Earth, and the fate of the entire Five Galaxies. Sweeping, brilliantly crafted, inventive and dramatic, The Uplift War is an unforgetable story of adventure and wonder from the pen of one of today's science fiction greats."- from the back cover Here we get to know Brin's uplifted chimpanzees (and a few humans) and two of the galactic races pivotal to the future of the Terran species: the Tymbrimi - one of the few races sympathetic to and allied with humanity, and the Thennanin - an antagonistic though not fanatically inimical race. The uplifted chimps are much like us, but Brin maintains an 'alieness' even here. From sexuality to outlook on life in general, Brin is careful to present us with chimps that are not simply 'little people', but instead a wholly different species. |
