I had a friend in high school named Stuart Schillinger. I guess at the time, he was more of an acquaintance - a friend of a friend. But while I was living in Boulder CO, he was a roommate for 3 semesters, as I remember now. One day we were talking about story ideas, and he asked, "What if there was a planet of lost Klingons?", or something like that.
Well, I thought it was kind of a neat idea, so we started kicking it around some. Stuart didn't have much more than that, and we both sort of lost interest - I don't know, we may have been a little drunk at the time. Stuart was working at the Coors plant in Golden CO at the time - I don't remember what his job was, he was working on a BS in Chemical Engineering at CU Bouder - but he could get a case of anything Coors was making at the time for practically the price of 6-pack at a liquor store.
Some time later, the idea came back to me, and I starting thinking about it pretty seriously. The Klingons of TOS were so different from the Klingons of ST:TNG, and I was thinking about what could account for such a change. Berman and company addressed that later in ST:E, but I was thinking more about the Klingon society than Klingon forehead ridges. :-)
Anyway, This was the only script I wrote with strong A and B stories, and I was particularly proud of that aspect of the script.
In fact, I think, all things considered, this is my favorite of my scripts. Worf kicks ass. Riker kicks ass. Data kicks ass. Everyone kicks ass!
