Methodism came to Wamego in 1867, as Rev. T.F. Herd was appointed to begin a church here during the session of Annual Conference held that year in Manhattan. The church that was formed as a result of that early-year appointment continues to be in ministry today, as First United Methodist Church, located at 600 Lincoln in Wamego, and is now in its 134th year. The church has grown since its first report of 60 members, in 1869, to the 591 reported at the close of the year 2000. It has been located at approximately the same Lincoln Street address since the first wooden frame structure was dedicated in 1878. The building that now houses the sanctuary was built in 1908 and the Fellowship Hall addition was completed in 1965. During the year 2000, the church purchased the Lichtenhan Hardware store north of the church parking lot and soon will own all of the east side of the 600 block of Lincoln. Plans are being made to expand the sanctuary and education facilities. Major remodeling projects of the sanctuary were completed in 1948 and in 1981. The churches
ministry has been facilitated over the years
by countless dedicated laity, too numerous to list.
